March 4, 2025 Storm Slams the Big Country: High Winds and Hail Hit Abilene and Surrounding Towns

On March 4, 2025, a powerful storm swept through the Big Country region of Texas, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. Communities within a 50-mile radius of Abilene, including Clyde, Merkel, Baird, Tuscola, Buffalo Gap, Tye, and Anson, faced severe weather conditions that tested the resilience of residents and infrastructure alike.

Storm Overview

The day began with a line of thunderstorms developing after midnight, moving rapidly eastward across central and eastern parts of west-central Texas. These storms brought damaging winds and hail up to quarter size. Rainfall amounts varied, with localized higher amounts east of a Throckmorton to Abilene to Coleman line.

Following the thunderstorms, a potent upper-level storm system introduced strong west winds, with gusts ranging from 50 to 65 mph across much of the area. The Junction Airport recorded a peak wind gust of 66 mph. These intense winds led to widespread blowing dust, reducing visibilities to 2-5 miles, with localized reports of less than 1 mile.
