Tips for Spring Roof Maintenance
West Texas’ high winds, high temperatures and hail can take a toil on shingle roofs in Abilene and the surrounding Big Country. Spring is right around the corner and it’s a good time to do a yearly inspection on your roof before the windy and rainy (we hope) season begins. Here are six tips to help extend the life of your roof.
Clear gutters
Gutters are an important tool to keep water moving and prevent unwanted home repairs. Your gutters may have accumulated debris over the winter. Make sure to clear them to prevent clogging that could create leaks.
Trim trees
Likewise, it’s a good idea to remove any branches that can rub on or fall on your roof during high winds or a storm. Remove all leaves and debris from the roof.
Repair missing shingles
Look for shingles that may have been blown off by wind, have started to disintegrate or have started to curl. Check with your roofing contractor and your insurance policy if you suspect damage caused by weather. Insurance policies usually give you a limited amount of time to make a claim to get your roof repaired.
Check flashings
Flashing is metal used to divert water on your roof wherever your roof meets a vertical surface. Check to see if the flashing around your vents, chimneys and skylights is doing its job to prevent water from getting under the roof deck.
Be Weather Aware
Be sure to check the local forecast and be prepared for potentially dangerous and damaging spring storms. The National Weather Service out of San Angelo is always a good source of information. You can sign up for CodeRed for Abilene, Texas and Taylor County here.
