Steps after Storm Damage

If your roof is damaged by a storm, here are the steps you should take:

Ensure Safety

Safety should be your primary concern. If there are any immediate dangers such as downed power lines or structural instability, evacuate the area and call emergency services.

Assess the Damage

Once it's safe to do so, assess the extent of the damage. Look for signs of missing shingles, leaks, dents, or any other visible damage to the roof.

Document the Damage

Take photos or videos of the damage for insurance purposes. Documenting the damage will help support your insurance claim.

Temporary Repairs

If there are any minor damages that can be addressed temporarily, such as covering a small hole with a tarp to prevent further water damage, consider doing so. However, avoid making extensive repairs yourself, as this could void your insurance claim or cause further damage.

Contact Your Insurance Company

Contact your insurance provider as soon as possible to report the damage. Provide them with all the necessary information and documentation, including photos and videos of the damage.

Get Estimates

Once you've reported the damage to your insurance company, get an estimate from a reputable roofing contractor for the repair work. Ask if the contractors are insured. Be wary of out of town contractors who may be less responsive in the future.

Follow Insurance Procedures

Follow the procedures outlined by your insurance company for filing a claim and getting the repairs done. They may require you to wait for an adjuster to assess the damage before proceeding with repairs. Ask your insurance company the deadline to complete repairs from the date of loss.

Schedule Repairs

Once your insurance claim is approved, schedule the repairs with the contractor of your choice. Make sure the contractor provides a detailed estimate and timeline for the work.

Monitor Repairs

Keep an eye on the repair work to ensure it's done properly and according to the agreed-upon timeline.

Preventative Measures

After the repairs are complete, consider taking preventative measures to protect your roof from future storms, such as trimming overhanging tree branches or reinforcing vulnerable areas.

Remember to stay patient throughout the process, as repairing storm damage can take time. Keep communication lines open with your insurance company and contractor to ensure a smooth resolution.
